Domestic Violence

The Attorney General's Office Domestic Violence Division performs a myriad of functions in the area of training and prevention in the issues of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, dating violence and human trafficking. Some of these functions include:

  • - Providing direct prosecutorial assistance and training with regard to specific issues in the prosecution of domestic violence, stalking and sexual assault cases, including research and brief drafting;
  • - Providing training to law enforcement, prosecutors, judges and other court personnel in a variety of related topics, including, but not limited to: (1) state domestic violence laws, (2) effective investigation of stalking and strangulation allegations, and (3) the enforcement of local and foreign orders of protection and procedures for documentation and recording of those orders;
  • - Reviewing state law and working with state, local and federal officials to improve the legal system's response to victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and human trafficking.
  • - Providing assistance to prosecutors and law enforcement agencies with regard to ensuring their domestic violence policies comport with state and federal law, and with the Crime Victims’ Bill of Rights;
  • - Providing advocacy and referrals specifically for victims of domestic violence, stalking or sexual assault;
  • - Operation and maintenance of the statewide MS Protection Order Registry, as well as the development of the uniform offense report, pursuant to mandates from the MS Legislature.
  • - Encouraging the development of healthy relationship education and curricula in our high schools.
